D1 and D2

Regular diesel fuel comes in two grades: Diesel 1-D) and Diesel or 2-D). The higher the cetane number, the more volatile the fuel. Most diesel vehicles use fuel with a rating of 40 to 55. You won’t have to worry about which type to use because all diesel automakers specify Diesel #2 for normal driving conditions. Truckers use Diesel #2 to carry heavy loads for long distances at maintained speeds because it’s less volatile than Diesel #1 and provides greater fuel economy.

D6 is a class of residual fuel, largely used in power plants and larger ships. The fuel is required to be preheated before it can be used. It is not reasonable to use it in smaller engines or vessels/vehicles where it is not possible to pre-heat it. D6 is its name in the USA. In other parts of the world, it has other names. Number 6 fuel oil is a high-viscosity residual oil requiring preheating to 220 – 260 °F (104 – 127 °C).

Residual means the material remaining after the more valuable cuts of crude oil have boiled off. The residue may contain various undesirable impurities including 2 per cent water and one-half per cent mineral soil. D6 fuel is also known as residual fuel oil (RFO), by the Navy specification of Bunker C, or by the Pacific Specification of PS-400.

Silos in the ecoMotion factory in Sternberg, Germany, 6 April 2017. The factory only produces 30 percent of the biodiesel it could produce, as rape-biodiesel is hard to sell in the German mineral oil industry. The reason for such low production is the the climate protection quota of 2015, the company claims.
